Shy’ah immediately feels the twinge in her own heart as Kestrel feels it and turns to face the Triumvirate member with a look of concern and worry. She watches Kestrel carefully for a moment, slowly turning to see Kestrel from the side then looking outright away.

“He’s been better I think,” she admits. “He’s over doing it, as to be expected from Kei. Not taking great care of himself. I think he’s sleeping in the station mostly.” She sighs. :He’s acting like he has something he needs to prove, or perhaps he simply feels he cannot relax. He’s sad I think that he hasn’t seen many of us from the Fringe and socially is being over stimulated. But…” she turns back to Kestrel making eye contact. “He really wants to keep doing this I think. I think, as much as he is pushing himself, Kei…is doing what he is called to do, what he feels he’s meant to do. I think he does enjoy it he just…hasn’t learned the balance of self care yet.” She frowns thoughtfully and inhales slowly. “If you don’t mind, I felt your regret and sorrow when I said Kei’s name. Would it be okay to ask about that? If not that is okay. Most people don’t want their thoughts and emotions to be known, so I can respect that.”

The corners of mouth turn downward as she hears about Kei being overworked and exhausted. At the same time it was a very familiar story. “I think you’re right about him feeling it’s what he’s meant to do. When Duke became sheriff it really seemed like what he was meant to do, and he worked himself ragged just the same as Kei is doing.”

It shouldn’t have, but Shy’ah’s insight to her feelings caught Kestrel off guard. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise before she looked back to the ground embarrassed. “No, it’s fine,” she replied a bit more quietly than before then offered Shy’ah a vulnerable smile, “It’s just a bit tender still. When the Old Masters attacked the night of the betrayal they brought a gelatinous cube with them. I hope you never have to face one of those things, they are strong and hard to kill. This one had Old Masters guarding it and necromantic abilities abilities of its own, so every time one of us fell it turned us against our friends. I fell. Then while I was its undead thrall, I kept Kei from escaping. He had almost escaped too. Ever since then he’s been uncomfortable and stand-offish around me. Really, I can’t blame him, we all lost a piece of our soul, I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t want to see my face for awhile.”

There is a knock on the door followed by it cracking open slightly. “Miss Kestrel? I was wondering if you had a few minutes to spare?” the brown hat and coat of Dusk moves through the doorway before realizing he may be intruding. “My apologies, If I interrupting I can come back another time.” His eyes still look tired but he has taken some time to clean his coat and hat. The cigarette dangling from his mouth is as of yet unlit.

Shy’ah listens quietly but at the end she offers a half smile tilting her head to the side to fall into Kestrel’s view. When eye contact is made gently teaches out and touches Kestrel’s shoulder.

“You know it isn’t your fault right?” she asks. Then rolls her eyes at herself. “Who am I kidding. You’ve probably heard that a million times already. There was nothing you could have done. I’ve heard so much about that fight, and am getting more and more details every day. That cube…was fucked up. That scenario was fucked up. Kei knows it. That guy has a heart of gold. He couldn’t hold a grudge unless someone really deserved it. And you don’t. And he knows that, I’m sure of it. He probably hates himself for being mad at you…he just doesn’t handle vulnerability well. Feeling helpless. Especially physically.” She sighs and runs her hand through her sapphire hair. “And he probably doesn’t know I know this about him…he’d be upset with me I think.” She offers a half smile, then playfully adds, “I can go tell him…then he can be mad at both of us for things we can’t help?” She tries to offer a comforting smile but even Shy’ah’s fades and she looks away. “I know…what that feels like. What he must be feeling. When…when the genocide started it wasn’t just genocide…they took my people, tore out their psionics then forces it back inside them in a twisted way. It turned the psions into these…things. Some were animal like, some where…serial killers. All of them were…souless… heartless… Cruel…they became proxies for a terrible Ancient One that felt threatened by my order. They hunted us down, immune to our powers. But they were our friends before. They couldn’t help it. I learned the hard way to get past that. For ten years I was hunted by my own people, unable to do anything about it. So…I know that feeling and he knows just as I did that you had no control over what happened. And you need to know that too, okay? There was nothing you could have done. Anymore than my friends could have as they hunted me like dogs.” She looks at Kestrel with eyes full of concern, but ultimately powerless to do anything substantial. Shy’ah wants so badly to just take away Kestrel’s pain. But that’s not how it works and she knows that. “I can talk to him…or I can mediate for you two. If you’d like? I’m worried your rift will only get worse if you don’t talk.”

Shy’ah jumps out of her skin as the cowboy comes in, having just finished offering to help Kestrel with her concerns with Kei.

“Fuck!” she utters under her breath as she clutches her chest. She pants quietly glancing over her shoulder at Dusk. “You scared the shit out of me…um…who are you? and I think we’re…um…” she looks to Kestrel to answer Dusk’s question, shrugging as she waits for the answer to her own offer.

Kestrel gave Shy’ah a small smile of thanks and put a hand on her arm. “Thank you, but I think it’s just a matter of letting time heal things so they’re a bit less tender before either of us go poking at it.” As much as she wanted to address the rest of what Shy’ah said, another guest to her clinic had arrived.

“Dusk! No worries, Shy’ah and I were just getting to know each other better, please come in!” She smiles delighted to see another friend here in her clinic. “Shy’ah, this is Dusk, one of the best bounty hunters here in Oasis, and Dusk, this is Shy’ah, a new arrival to the Fringe.”

“Dusk?” Shy’ah asks as she turns to face the old west looking man. She eyes him up and down raising an eyebrow as she does. She sighs through her nose and turns back to the siren. “Want me to leave you two?” she asks softly.

“Pleasure to meet ya Shy’ah” Dusk tips his hat slightly to her. ” No worries it isn’t anything private, just checking in on Miss Kestrel and seeing if anyone knows where Flash got off too.” he steps into the doorway at Kestrel’s invite. “Well now I never will turn down an invite from a pretty lady.” he smiles at her and tips his hat in thanks for the invite.

Kestrel nodded in agreement with Dusk. “Please feel free to stay here too. Having two friends around would brighten up my day twice as much. Though, are you doing alright Dusk? You look about as tired as I feel, and I’ve been spending all my time fighting a war on two fronts.”

Dusk pulls up a chair and lights his cigarette by popping the flint match with his thumb. “Boy I tell ya, I thought bounty hunting was tiring. Being a medical doctor is twice as bad. Seems like I got all sorts of wounded and sick coming through my door. Damn near out of soma injections already.” he pulls out a silver flask and tips it back quickly then offers it out to the other two.

Shy’ah moves to make more room for Dusk, this way her back isn’t to him or Kestrel. She leans back, throwing the blue braid over her shoulder as she watches the new face. Over all she looks post apocalyptic, with some strange make-shift armor and two pistols are her hips as well as a short sword. She seems to eye Dusk with hesitation, as if trying to keep her distance from the new arrival. All trace of her outburst of fright has seemingly disappeared and she sits watchful and calm.

“Last I think anyone saw Flash,” she begins quietly, referring to his earlier inquiry. “Was last night when I talked him out of killing that merchant.” She eyes the flask suspiciously then looks back at the man. “No soma in there right?”

Dusk smiles charmingly. ” No miss, just good old fashioned whiskey.” he eyes her pistols. “Those are some fine shooting irons you got there.”

“My man,” she whispers as she takes the flask, knocking back the whiskey and then sighing with satisfaction. She then passes it to Kestrel to sip next as her eyes glance down at her guns. “They’re nothing special. One concussive and the other…okay the other’s high tech so that’s kind of nice.” She nudges her head at him. “Do you…know a lot about guns?”

” I know a fair bit.” He pulls back his coat slightly to show the handle of two pistols, both high tech. “Lately been having some fun with artillery as well, Kestrel can attest to that one. ” He winks over at the siren. ” You a fair hand with them pistols or you prefer the blade?”

Shy’ah glances over at the siren then smirks softly as she turns back to Dusk.

“My preferred method is…something else entirely,” she says quietly.
